Finding Color in the Collection: Art, Science, and Social Justice  (Exhibits (Museum, Gardens, ...))

Associate Professor Jon Frey, who teaches Classical Studies and Art History and Visual Culture at MSU, will share his research around issues of color and pigmentation as applied to ancient art and antiquities. Part lecture, demonstration, and workshop, attendees will learn about the history of coloration as applied to ancient art in the MSU Broad Art Museum collection and the science behind its analysis and detection, and explore the racial and social implications of color and "whiteness" through an art historical lens. This program takes place with the current exhibition History Told Slant: Seventy-seven Years of Collecting Art at MSU as its backdrop. Additional speakers and invited guests will join the conversation, sharing their unique perspectives on the intersections of art, science, and social justice. Registration for this free event is required. Register here.

This event is in partnership with the MSU Science Festival. The MSU Science Festival is a "free annual celebration of science." This year's theme is: Envisioning the Future.

History Told Slant: Seventy-seven Years of Collecting Art at MSU is on view through Aug. 7, 2022 at the MSU Broad Art Museum.
